    Blender Guru| High Quality Blender Tutorials - 2012-05-17 22:21:29

For this competition, the theme was simple: Create your dream holiday.

A total of 79 entries were received, covering a variety of different holidays ideas and locations.

    Let’s start…

    Finalists

These are the entries that although didn’t win, look great and deserve a mention:

Nicely captures the atmosphere of a late afternoon fishing trip. The character really helps to sell the scene, and the water splashes around the fish are some of the best I’ve seen. The only thing letting it down is that parts of the scene appear too dark for the sky. But other than that, it’s excellent work!

Beautiful! Now that’s my kind of holiday ;) The lighting and color grading in particular are very well done. I like the small details like the icicles, shrubbery, and snowy mountains in the distance. A solid effort indeed! Well done Deoce.

Definitely an unorthodox choice for a “perfect holiday”, but I encourage creative ideas. The characters are unique and the tornado in the background looks great. It could probably use a more effect color scheme and better lighting in places, but overall it’s a great effort ;)

The colors in this image are fantastic! You captured the feeling of a sunset at the beach perfectly. My only critique is that the ocean seems to end after about 50 metres! But other than that I really like it. Well done Zekers.

I guess fishing is quite a popular hobby for blender artists? I love the nature and lighting in the background. The biggest let down would have to be the dark rocks and logs in the foreground, as they aren’t immediately recognizable to the viewer. But great work otherwise :)

    Winner

Congratulations Nita! You’ve won $500 donated to a charity of your choice + a permanent spot in the Winners Hall of Fame.

The lighting, rendering and modelling in this scene is top notch. I like how you kept the background simple so that the focus is on the girl and the horse. Beautiful composition. The love heart shaped bokeh was a really nice touch too. The scene is an excellent portrayal of everyone’s childhood: pure bliss and living in the moment.

One of my favourite scenes yet!

    Honourable Mention

It’s kind of sneaky to include this image as it wasn’t actually submitted for the competition, but instead uploaded 2 weeks ago on Facebook by Pratik Solanki (winner of the first competition). However, since it suits the theme so perfectly I just had to include it! Can you guess who the characters in the scene are? ;)

A big thank you to everyone who entered this competition! The entries were all in all very impressive and I love seeing what the community is capable of.

Unfortunately I don’t have time to explain why each entry wasn’t selected as the winner, but if you list your name in the comments and ask for critiques, I’m sure the community will be more than happy to give you some pointers.

Stay tuned for the next competition to be announced next week ;)

  • Sculpting a Male Human Bust in Blender
    Blender Cookie - 2012-05-17 16:13:05

    blender_sculpting_human_bust_male_feature

Hello and welcome to this video tutorial on Sculpting a Human Bust in Blender!

In this Blender tutorial by Kent Trammell you’ll be introduced to a basic sculpting workflow for creating a human bust. The final result of the tutorial is shown below.

    What you’ll learn:

Starting with a simple base mesh, you’ll learn to shape form and anatomy with an artistic perspective in Blender’s Sculpt Mode with brushes like Grab, Draw, Inflate, Pinch, and Crease.  The majority of the sculpting is done symmetrically.  Towards the end of the sculpt we’ll pose the torso easily in Edit Mode with the proportional editing tool, while maintaining the sculpted detail in the Multiresolution modifier.

If you’re not familiar with Blender’s sculpting system then I recommend you check out our Introduction Blender’s Sculpting System video. It is slightly out of date now, but most of the content is still relavant.

Brecht is checking on Open Color IO, he did a quick export which results in the jpgs below. Interesting but not sure if this is 100% correct, it feels too much contrasted. We keep digging :) This is what Brecht did:

    1. setenv OCIO /path/to/ocio/aces/config_1_0_3.ocio
    2. oiiotool –colorconvert aces rrt_srgb in.exr -o out.jpg
