The integration between Blender 3D and FreeStyle render, which is capable of create great NPR images is one of the features develop as part of the SoC 2008. It is Illustration Friday time again and the word this week is “Frozen”, and that suits me just fine. Here in Vienna it is freezing, and we even had a little bit of snow yesterday, though it didn’t lie, perfect inspiration for this Illustration Friday word.
I’ve snipped out a detail from a painting I did a couple of years ago and I think it looks pretty and says frozen quite clearly as well. Looking at the image it seems like I overdid it with the “save for web and devices”, everything in the picture is a little blurry and pixilated. I’ll be more careful in future, but I think you can still pretty much see what’s going on in the image. It’s a picture of penguins sitting and killing time on an iceberg for anyone who needs a clue.
And it’s nice to have an old school painting on the site after all the Photoshop and 3d Blender CG art I’ve been doing lately. It’s tempting to pick the paint brush up again and do more of these images.I could even then scan in the paintings and load them into Blender. Then I could stitch them around an invisible 3d object and make animations out of them.
I’ve already started experimenting with this idea, although so far I have only scanned in some basic sketches, and not any complex paintings. The results are already starting to look pretty good though.
This animation is just a small test, just a rotating mouse head made from a sketch that I scanned in to Blender and animated in 3d.
Blender 2.50 will contain a materials library 'out of the box'! That's a very nice feature if you ask me. A call for materials has been posted on the forums.
LetterRip writes:
A material library will be added to Blender for 2.5 we would like to invite the community to participate in this by donating material settings. [...]
So for the past few months I have been working for Rogue Pirate Ninja interactive on a game for the iPhone called iRis. The game is a 3D tile matching game much like Columns or Tetris, with the cool twist that instead of moving the falling block as it descends, you rotate the rest of [...]
Lets summarize what my last few months have been about:
July 15th: Just arrived from Amsterdam!, wohoo! vacations until August 13th. August 13-25th: Venezuela!, flew together with Claudio Andaur (malefico) and Daniel Salazar (ZanQdo) to San Cristóbal (Táchira) for a Blender Advanced Course, great experience! (which included my right foot growing 200% or so, full of “stuff” inside, thanks to a mosquito or something my body never handled before =/ )
Our humble Patagonian Bconf! yeah we were 4!
September.. where did September go? geez time flies.. spent some family time and visited my brother at Rio Grande (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina) whom I haven’t seen for a while.
Spreading Blender on the southernmost region of America
All this time has been great Blender-Socially speaking, got to meet with some patagonian Blenderheads (from Patagonia region, the extreme south of America – the continent not the country, where I live).
We even had our humble “1st Patagonian Blender Conference” ever!, yeah well just 4 patagonian guys gathered together at home with my computer + 2 laptops, where we had quick workshops and showed off some works of our own, plus a latter pizza+beer , enough for a conference!
During my stay at Río Grande, I also got the chance to give a talk about Blender and Open Content at the university, it was great! I see many Blenderheads coming from that direction thanks to Pablo Lizardo for the idea/organizing it!
Up: Pablo Lizardo holding a workshop! Facu listening carefully. Down: (couple of) Beer at "Belfast" an Irish pub here at my town.
Back to Europe!
Yep! I’m crossing the Atlantic for the second time on this year, (sort-of) schedule at the moment:
October 22nd: Arrive to Amsterdam, meet the Durian team and get some delicious IJ beers!
October 26th – November 5th: Italian Alps! will be doing some freelance work on Brunico, hope to blogpost from there !
November 6/7 : Blendiberia 2009!, the Spaniard Blender Conference in Murcia, Spain. Will be holding a workshop about Blender 2.5x.
November 9/10: Blender courses in Murcia, Spain. More info here. (Spanish)
November 11st – Who knows until when!: back to lovely Aubonne, Switzerland, more freelance animation work for RGB Prod, awesome
Blender Conference 2009!
So that’s my schedule so far! I’m glad to be busy again on the Blender road, will be doing my best to close this year as the greatest one so far in a long time! With a lot of traveling and Venom’s Lab!, I’m very happy with how it goes until now, and it can only get better!

Ian showed us some pretty hardcore battle scenes today, all of them wonderfully amped up with explosions and scintillating visual effects. Jen reports that Josh did come in last Saturday to complete his last session of ADR. Ed and Dan are working to finish scrubbing audio for a small number of remaining scenes by the end of October. Then we'll be able to resume ADR again.
Here are the stats.
Status of Visual Effects (VFX) Shots:
Number remaining: 89
Number in progress: 6
Number completed: 528
Percentage remaining: 14.4% (LESS THAN 15%!!)
Doom: "Look out! The chandelier!" (calculated by Ian)
Projected date for completion of all VFX:
24 January 2010 (based on projected time estimates of all tasks)
18 February 2010 (based on spreadsheet items completed per week)
This week’s recommendations: Ian: "PB & J with chocolate" because, how can you not like peanut butter and jelly, Jen Forbes. Jen: "Fly Film Making" because getting everything written, shot, cut in a weekend is the only way to make a movie. If you have time, then it will take time. Bryce: "Rx Bandits" because they're amazing. Nate: "The Nurse Who Loved Me" by A Perfect Circle. This song falls into the Mellow Gold and Madness categories. The singer has a fractured relationship with reality. The music has a solid relationship with your ears. Phil: "Olias of Sunhillow" by Jon Anderson. Still one of the most beautiful and moving albums of all time.
