  • vSwarm - RenderFarm online gratuita!
    4RTE DIGIT4L - 2009-10-03 19:14:00

  • Germs and a Telegraphics free plugin for Photoshop
    Starbright Illustrations (blog) - 2009-10-03 18:41:28

I'm here to infect you! Grrr!

This week’s word on Illustration Friday is Germs. It’s great to have a nice rancid word like this so I can just let rip with my illustration.

Again after sketching my germ and adding colour with Photoshop I’m doing my 2D/3D illustration thing, but I’m having a problem with an unwanted white outline appearing in ooh no, that ugly white outline has to gothe resulting transparent pngs. I’m using transparent pngs as the raw material to load into Blender and turn into 2.5D to create the Germ images. I found some interesting advice on this Adobe forum though, including…

Re: Faint image border when saving JPG/PNG

Why not create your styled text on a transparent layer, then save as a PNG24?
No filled rectangle to deal with just your text and fully alpha-channeled warped!transparency. It’ll work over any background color you choose for your webpage.

OK so I had been using PNG8, perhaps that was the problem. I resaved my ugly green germ illustration as a PNG24 and it was much better – yet still not perfect. The idea of Illustration Friday is to come up with an image however, not mess about with PNG settings, so I restarted Blender and started to warp the surface supporting my germ illustration, to make it look 3D. I think it works nicely, except for the eye getting a bit distorted.

    behind the scenes

P.S. Of course my favicon didn’t work because Microsoft needs some strange format called ico. There is a solution though, an ico plugin for Photoshop > Telegraphics – Free plugins for Photoshop & Illustrator…and other software, thank goodness for open source.

  • Alpha problem with transparent gif texture – and answer from Blender Artists Forums
    Starbright Illustrations (blog) - 2009-10-03 16:28:35

hasn't he got a big nose? I’ve had another idea for an animation – yes I know I’m not finished with my first cute cat animation, but this idea is a really good one and can’t wait. It’ll be a kind of 2D version of a 3D animation.

My idea is that instead of creating characters and scenery from 3D primitives and other meshes in Blender, I’ll just draw them freehand with a pencil and scan them in as gifs instead, or maybe pings I haven’t decided yet.

You see, no matter what I try some of the feedback I’ve been getting about my 3D works is that it looks too glossy and smooth, too much like Pokemon.

So in response to this feedback I have been trying to directly turn my 2D sketches into a 3D animation, but came across some problems. I want to simply sketch my characters and then model them in 2.5D in Blender. I thought that would be easy if I just added a transparent gif with nontransparent outlines of my character created in Photoshop or Gimp, and then filled in the outlines with 3D shapes.

But when I added a gif it had a grey border (where the original plane holding the gif peeked out, not the transparent border I expected, what on earth was I to do. I started Googling to see if anyone else had had this problem, and lo and behold, [beginner] Alpha texture problem (colored edge around a transparant gif texture) – Blender Artists Forums, everything spelled out in small words, just the way I like it.

    From Public Album

Steve Ogden is a professional 2d and 3d artist. He currently works at Firaxis games, but in his spare time he works on personal projects, such as Moon Town. It was originally planned as an animated web series, but Steve decided to switch mediums in order to get the story out in a much more effective and immediate way.

Steve happily discusses his inspirations, past work, and thoughts on storytelling.

Steve's personal blog can be found at www.steveogden.com
Moon Town is available at www.moon-town.com

In other news: my personal dot-com is now live! Head on over to paulcaggegi.com now and check it out. I'll still be keeping this blog up because it drives the podcast, but I shall be using the dot-com to host various files and extra content.
