I’ve moved the project over into Blender from Max (my version of Max is R9, which is getting increasingly dated…) Also, there was nothing wrong with Blender fur, as I stated several months ago to justify moving a project to my school-licensed copy of Max R9.
Also, for the first time I used the live-retopo to create the eyelids (after creating spheres I modeled on top of them and moved them out, creating perfect and thin eyelids)… so I’m really quite sold.
The next time I switch apps, I think it will be because I have to, not because of features. I like Blender, but I know it’s not used in studio settings a lot… so I sort of have to figure out a way around that. Though my Max experience should be enough to get me a job if I lived in the right places, I would use Blender if I could.

Tube - Epic Production Notes - 2009-11-02 19:57:44
I’m in the middle of considering whether switching tube to 2.5 is a good idea or a terrible one; on the one hand, there are many goodies there that would make our lives much, much easier, and more planned on the durian timeline; tops on my list are the new animation system, impoved python api, and the planned improvments to the library/linking/proxies system, and later down the line, all the render improvements and speedups.
On the other hand, Blender 2.5 simply isn’t ready at this point in time for a production this size; too many things aren’t done (even in the above list) and even some 2.49 stuff still isn’t ported. In addition, there are crashes, hangs, segfaults, you name it… not a safe thing at all. In order to make this transition make sense, we have to commit to a ‘durian +1′ schedule: that is: take Durian’s schedule and add one month.
Benefits of this is I really don’t have much scheduling to do! i’d take advantage of Ton’s excellent organizational abilities, in addition to his (and the rest of the team’s) new code. Downside is that Durian is a bigger project, and I don’t think I need the entire production time of Durian to finish tube… we’ll see.
To make things even harder, Aligorith (Joshua) has just added a great new feature on the durian wishlist.. spline IK.. making it even more tempting.
Jamal and I have made builds on our machines with the new spline IK in them. Be aware that Jamal switched his 2.5 build to use the new cocoa port to 64 bit, so he’s making (lets see if I get it right) a universal binary which will use 64 bits on 64 bit machines. Both are available in the downloads section of this site.

Hello! Last year I made Da New Guys: For The Winnings, and now I've finished Mite! – a short sci-fi comedy about an alien invasion gone wrong.
It was shown at the end of the Suzanne festival at BConf this year which was great for me to see it on the big screen. I've also [...]
Sintel, the Durian Open Movie Project - 2009-11-02 17:51:23
Last week, I paid a two-day visit to the team in Amsterdam. Aside from getting to know each other, introducing me to the ubiquitous windmill beer and overstretching the definition of “vegetarian” at the local Thai joint, I got lots of cool insights into the production process and, of course, discussed the soundtrack with Colin and Ton.
As some parts of the script aren’t quite finalized yet, we mostly talked about the general approach while avoiding getting tangled up in details that may change later. Luckily, it turns out that Colin and I have largely the same taste in film music, so I’m positive we’ll quickly establish a musical language that works well for both of us. The central aspect of my current scoring concept is to assign a musical figure to our heroine that sticks to her throughout the story and is sufficiently flexible to transform in unison with her character. One particular thing I’d like to experiment with is deriving minimalist patterns from this theme and use them as a backdrop for larger thematic progressions… we’ll see how that will turn out. Also, while there will be a lot of action in the film, each of these sequences has a vastly different meaning in the context of the dramaturgy, so we discussed some ideas on how to avoid descending into cookie-cutter action cue territory there.
As for the production details, a lot depends on some budgetary decisions that are still pending. It seems likely that I’ll get to hire session musicians or smaller ensembles for prominent parts of the score; there’s a chance that there will be choir parts, so those would be an obvious candidate. The possibility of recording the entire score with a full orchestra is also not entirely out of the question, though I’m somewhat reluctant to try this on a constrained budget; simply put, I feel that the score might be better served with some really good session musicians and sufficient recording time instead of a rush job with an average orchestra.
During the next 2-3 weeks, I’ll be busy with a major studio relocation. Which is quite a shame, as I got back with a head full of ideas and an strong urge to spend a couple of days in front of a piano. Did I mention that they do some incredibly inspiring stuff over there? Well, they do.

graphicall: New Collada format GSoC has been merged into Trunk! ;) [24226] http://tinyurl.com/ybw2pfe
Letwory Interactive - 2009-11-02 07:20:13
Arystan Dyussenov has finally managed to merge the GSoC COLLADA branch to trunk. I have been fighting with a broken-ish build environment and the OpenCOLLADA libraries since then.
First, many days were wasted in figuring out why during linking of the first library of OpenCOLLADA the build process would go in an eternal loop, issueing linking commands for the same library over and over again. After having tried different SCons versions, and several futile hacks of the SCons-files of the project, I took a harder look at my own environment.
We have had some talk about having ie. gstreamer as a replacement for FFMPEG. This means some new dependencies that traditionally are pretty hard to build on Windows (ignore FFMPEG here, it’s even harder). I found the OAH project. I decided to give it a spin – after some fiddling around, no good luck. I forgot about it. So yesterday I finally looked at my environment and noticed that the OAH linker would always somehow be used. After uninstalling the thing, I finally got through to linking and beyond! Then it was just a matter of doing some small fixes and picking the right settings for the libraries.
Last night I uploaded all libraries and their headers, necessary for Blender 2.5 to build with COLLADA support on Windows (32bit). I have uploaded the binary release of my build on Graphicall.org as build 1159.
Give the build a spin and report any problems with it to our bug tracker.
At least it now imports Sketchup-files (note: get the COLLADA format, not .skp)! For instance, below a model from Google 3D Warehouse:

I was commissioned by Little Rock Fashion Week to make their DVD Cover. The results are below, applied as a texture on a virtual DVD case. Rest assured the work is at print resolution. I can make DVD Covers, Posters, or other designs as well. If you think you’re interested and you need some design work done, feel free to shoot me an email.
Coming soon, a photo of a physical DVD case with my cover on it!

The Blender file has been dwelling on my hard drive for a long time already and I made up my mind to give it up once and for all, but by that I don't mean discontinue it but instead just to call it done. So here it is and hope you like it, "Cosmic Eggs".

{jcomments on} After a tipoff from Skateboardkid on the Blenderartists forum, BlenderCars.com has gotten in touch with DMI and received permission to convert and distribute a great deal of his large catalog of .LWO models. The conversion process will begin shortly and the models will begin appearing within the week to practice rendering and 3D tuning.
