  • Stabright Ts, the new t-shirt sales page with our illustrations
    Starbright Illustrations (blog) - 2009-12-13 22:51:02

    alien dj t-shirt page

Energised by yesterday’s t-shirt sale I went back to RedBubble with the intention of totally spring cleaning my online shop there. When I got to the site I discovered a new feature that they are calling BubbleSites. It is a nice looking page that you can set up to act as the shopping cart for people to buy t-shirts of the images they like from your own website.

So of course I lost no time in setting one up for Starbright Illustrations. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Stabright Ts. And the first image I uploaded was the Alien DJ, one of the first designs I ever did for a t-shirt, which has been hanging around on my hard drive – and online – for some time now.

I’m also going to be producing images specially for this new part of the site, featuring prominently cute characters and other t-shirt friendly art.

So I opened GIMP and sketched an image which I called “Happy Rhino”, a bright pink rhino with a big cheese eating smile on his face. I was very happy with it, and I saved it in the required png format. But when I uploaded it the t-shirt image on the gallery site looked a little paler than the original. It looked kind of bleached out. Here take a look…

    Pale rhino, not happy rhino.

And the Alien DJ colours look a little muted as well. So the question is, why?

I popped open the RedBubble advice page on how to make a great looking t-shirt to find out.

And in the first couple of paragraphs the page advises,

PNG files only deal with colours in RGB but our printers print your tees in CMYK so the best way to get the most out of your design is to create the image in CMYK and convert it to RGB before you save your document. Depending on what graphics software you are using, this should be easy to change. In both Photoshop and Gimp you will find these settings under image > mode.

Hmm, perhaps that was what I was doing wrong. I went back to GIMP to see what I could do about it, but I couldn’t find a CMYK option and every change I attempted on the huge png file took so long I just wanted to give up, and crawl away and die.

I’ll probably try again in a few days though, once one of these problems gets under my skin I just can’t rest until it’s solved. Oh well.

  • Explosion! More free wallpapers for the fun of it
    3rD Movement - 2009-12-13 21:45:00

Hey y'all, I have a new FREE dual screen and widescreen wallpaper. Anyway, after seeing the post about speed painting by David Revoy on the Durian blog I downloaded a few of the free applications he was showing. He was using Alchemy. I played with it for a while and came up with an explosion. Fun experimental wallpaper, I don't know if it will fit best as a wall paper, but screens are a good place to display digital art. Enjoy :D

    Monty says: Help saving MySQL

Sorry for breaking the Go Programming trend, but I think this is important news worth spreading around.

I've used MySQL and it would be a really sad thing if Oracle were to trash such a great OS project.

Maybe Google should jump on this as well.

  • Tutorial de Mapeado UV para blender 2.5
    pablo lizardo - digital artist - 2009-12-13 16:32:22

  • Facial Test
Sintel, the Durian Open Movie Project - 2009-12-13 13:49:21

Just a quick post. I’ve been messing around a bit with facial rigging.

The tricky bit is that it needs to fit within the framework of the autorigging system, and needs to be fast to set up for background characters without much manual work, and also needs to be flexible enough to let us get really top-notch results for main characters.

After discussions with Angela and some tests, I’ve settled on a hybrid approach between bones and shape keys. The idea is that even with only bones, the face rig should work well enough for background characters. But it will be supplemented with shape keys for main characters. Things like lip roll, nostril flare, squinting around the eyes, etc. will be done with shape keys. Corrective shape keys will also be used to preserve volume and define creases better.

This is a test of the bone-only setup for the mouth area:

It’s not perfect, and the facial expressions don’t necessarily match her character, but it’s a good proof-of-concept, I think.

  • City Maker 0.5
    Arkavision - 2009-12-13 11:58:58

I have updated my Java city building program.  The user interface is improved and a few bugs were taken care of.  It’s not 100% complete, but it should work like you would expect it to.  Just don’t put letters in the number fields (easy to prevent I know, but it’s pretty low on my priorities).

    citymaker

Operation of the program is just like before, except this time when you export from Blender, you should turn off “Rotate +Z to +Y”.  It has not been tested with other 3d applications, and your mileage may vary.  Also, you should know that there is zero support for materials at the moment.  If your model has materials, the saved result will not open in Blender.

For later versions I intend to fully support the VRML specification, which will allow for materials and support VRML files from other programs.

  • Second GIMP Article Now Up!
    Reyn's Blog - 2009-12-13 02:17:00

Hi, everyone! It's been a very busy month for me and a rewarding one at the same time.  Recently, I and Sanjay (from PacktPub) finished writing and editing my second GIMP article titled "Photo Compositing with The GIMP" where I discussed topics like color correction, photo composition, merging a real photo with an image made in GIMP, etc. However, you need to have some basic knowledge on how to
