  • Monster Sketch done in GIMP with a Wacom Graphics Tablet
    Starbright Illustrations (blog) - 2009-12-03 23:42:45

Pink and green, Claaash!! I’m still considering about which direction to go in with the inhabitants of the spaceship bar I designed in Blender.

Right now the inhabitants of the spaceship bar are all pretty much humanoid, and that’s all well and good, but then I suddenly thought about making them more alien and monstrous. I grabbed my Bamboo graphics tablet, jammed it in the USB port – I had to install the drivers all over again, which was odd – and then opened GIMP.

I’m trying to use the GIMP illustration software instead of Photoshop as much as possible now, I’m totally into the open source, free software thing. For my present needs GIMP is doing everything that I used to need Photoshop for and it doesn’t cost a penny. It makes the constant upgrading and cash investment of the Adobe world look a little ridiculous to be honest.

I’m really enjoying being able to jot down my ideas and try out designs directly in GIMP without having to pause and scan them in.

It’s great to see these quick designs instantly on the computer screen. After having a look at this one for instance it doesn’t strike me as the sort of alien that would be hanging around in a spaceship bar. I think it’s more the sort of wild little alien that might be encountered planet side in a strange jungle or alien forest.

It might even be a candidate for some kind of comic strip about alien high jinks, or some other more light-hearted kind of illustration. It reminds me of the Moonbugs online comic strips I was doing a little while ago. I might just have to start doing something like that again…

  • Seattle User Group meets on December 5th
    BlenderNation - 2009-12-03 19:18:11

The Seattle User Group is meeting again this Saturday. Oscar Baechler writes: In early October the first Seabug (Seattle Blender User Group) was hosted at The Art Institute of Seattle, and was a ripping success! Modeled after old-skool Linux user groups, the focus of SeaBUG is to connect with other students, hobbyists and professionals throughout the Puget [...]

My work is exhibited at the Chiefs and Spirits gallery in the Hague. We made three very high resolution prints based on the short film Tidal, which was released earlier this year. The prints will also be shown at the Miljonair Fair in Amsterdam, the Affordable Art Fair in Brussels, and perhaps also the one in London. But you can always drop by the gallery to have a look!

    Star Wars Misfortune

This is my Star Wars fanfilm. All the modelling, texturing, animating, post processing, audio editing and most of the voice acting is done by me. It has taken me about two years to complete.

CGI done in Blender, audio work done in Goldwave, video editing and post-processing done in Adobe AFX.

  • Blender ARt Gallery
    BlenderNation - 2009-12-03 06:44:22

Isn't it strange that the Blender community is lacking an extensive art gallery? Sure, there's a small selection on Blender.org and BlenderArtists.org, but the majority of great works go by unnoticed to the larger audience. Maybe the new 'Blender ARt Gallery' can fill this void? dronix wrote: Hey its me again. This time I have a project [...]

    Part 2: Skinned Interface

Hey let’s talk about the proverbial wheel.  Or more precisely the invention of it.  Or to be even more specific: why you should NOT reinvent the wheel.  (Unless you are Audi, in which case it’s okay because they are awesome!)

I am no programmer, but the last time I looked, one didn’t have to write their own UI elements for a GUI application, you can leave that to the OS.  So GUI programming is as easy as fire up your favorite IDE, drag a few controls to a form, and hit compile!  Easy right?  Not to Nero:

    Nero StartSmart

    Or Gigabyte

    EasyTune 6

    Nor Asus

    SmartDoctor

Why some software companies keeps on insisting on spending money and time to create their own skinned UI is baffling to me.  This creates nothing but inconsistency for the user, who expects every window to look like a native window.  Not some shiny and metallic spaceship control panel Asus!

There are other problems associated with non-native UIs: for users that rely on accessibility features, these custom skins often make screen-readers do weird things.

If you truly want your application to have a unique look, by all means, implement a skinnable interface ON TOP of the regular native interface, but don’t make it the only interface.

The only time when I think it would be okay to use non-OS-native-UI is if the application is cross-platform, in this case having a consistent UI across all the OS might be a good thing.  So let’s be thankful for Apple iTunes, Adobe Lightroom, and Blender for using non-native UI control elements, I firmly believe these 3 represents the best in User interface design.

  • Free e-book about rendering with Mental Ray for architectural visualization
    Blender 3D Architect - 2009-12-03 00:41:23

From all the renders used to create architectural visualization, I believe that Mental Ray is the second most used render engine, right behind VRay. The fact that 3ds Max already came with Mental Ray in all installations is a great help to get more users, but it doesn’t mean that it’s a bad renderer. In [...] Related posts:
