  • Modeling a Porsche 911 GT3 RS
    Montage Studio - 2009-12-05 18:56:32

    Hello all!

I have not done a very good job of updating this blog recently, but I did want to point you all towards part 01 of my latest tutorial Blender Cookie on modeling a Porsche 911 GT3 RS!
    porsche part1 slide Modeling a Porsche 911 GT3 RS

This multi-part tutorial I take a close look at how to model a Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Due to the nature of the car the tutorial encompasses a lot of techniques from both organic modeling and hard-body modeling styles. A particular emphasis is placed on creating good topology that will enable you to easily modify the shape but also to accurately create the details.

Part 01 of the this tutorial details how to create the base of the front end.

I hope you like it and as always I love hearing your feedback!

  • The Producer’s Report #95 - Holiday Progress
    Phil McCoy's Posts - Project London - 2009-12-05 18:00:00

It's been two weeks since our last report. We celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday, ate lots of turkey and stuffing. And through it all we kept our shoulder to the stone, nudging it forward to make more progress on the film and related items.

Charla Grenz-Solheim has been working with us to write up "our story" and it's coming together wonderfully.

We'd like to thank Jim Thacker at Jawbone.tv for writing a great interview with Ian about Project London. He characterized our project as the most ambitious no-budget effects film ever. Pretty cool.

Ian turned in some more amazing visuals. One of the shots during the epic final battle is so vertigo inducing that we wonder how strongly it's going to affect the audience. Ian, a film goer of strong stomache said, "I don't usually get sick watching crazy sick action sequences, but when I was working on this shot and trying to watch and track all the spinning around, I almost had to get up and leave the room to vomit." I replied, "Sir, you are a great filmmaker. I applaud you."

So today, Nate, Ian and me are heading to Bellingham to meet with Branson Anderson and discuss progress on the graphic novel. We are incredibly excited about this and will bring you more news soon. Stay tuned!

BTW, if you are free on December 11, you should come hang out with us at the Half Acre Day show (details here).

Here are the stats (based on two weeks of work).

Status of Visual Effects (VFX) Shots:
Number remaining: 46.5 (LESS THAN 50 Woot!)
    Number in progress: 6
    Number completed: 570
Percentage remaining: 7.9%% (LESS THAN 10% WOW!!)

    Doom: "Dinosaurs" (calculated by Ian)

Projected date for completion of all VFX:
30 January 2010 (based on projected time estimates of all tasks)
10 February 2010 (based on spreadsheet items completed per week)

    This week’s recommendations:
    Ian: "Dinosaurs"
Jen: "David Weber's Honor Harrington novel series." I never thought I could fall in love with books. Honor Harrington is my new hero, she's changed my life!
    Nate: "Bachelorette" by Bjork. Intense.
Phil: "A Love Story in Stop Motion" by Carlos Lascano. Watch it.

    Cheers,

    Phil McCoy, Executive Producer

  • Blender 2.5: Color Management
    BlenderNation - 2009-12-05 07:36:33

A new feature in Blender 2.5 that’s hard to spot is color management. It ‘linearizes’ colors for internal processes such as rendering and compositing and applies the appropriate gamma corrections for your display device. From Blender.org: Blender 2.5 includes a first version of Color Management. Currently this is limited to ensuring Linear Workflow during the render pipeline [...]

  • Blender 2.5 – r25133 – SSE optimisation for Renderer, Part II
    Letwory Interactive - 2009-12-05 00:38:22

So, I thought I had done nice optimised builds, but it turned out that SIMD optimisation was missing. I’ve now committed some SCons support for this though. The optimisations can now be turned on by building with scons using WITH_BF_RAYOPTIMIZATION=True.

I have re-uploaded 32bit and 64bit builds to graphicall.org that now have SSE optimisation for the renderer enabled.  You should now be able to successfully use SIMD QBVH and SIMD SVBVH, which would print that SSE was disabled during compile time when using the previous builds I posted.

To use any of the optimisations, check the Performance panel in render settings. The Auto setting tries to select the best optimisation strategy, but you can choose any of the other ones too. Octree is what we know from the previous Blender series, all the new names are from the GSoC work done by André Susano Pinto (jaguarandi).
