    mike's digital anthology - 2009-12-08 19:27:56

Inspired by the Jonathan’s video tutorial, I wanted to try my hands on car-modeling as well.  Not a big fan of supercars, I ended up picking something relatively mainstream: a BMW 335i coupe.  How am I doing so far?

    Elvis Alistar's Blog - 2009-12-08 16:32:21

I think anyone that browses the internet regularly should have heard about Google Wave by now. If you don’t know what Google Wave is you should check the looong video describing it on their main website: wave.google.com. There’s a short movie describing what Google Wave is here. The tag line Google uses is:  “Communicate and [...]
  • LunchBag Art is Cool!
    Phil McCoy's Posts - Project London - 2009-12-08 16:00:00

Jusk knocking around the Interweb, I stumbled accross Lunch Bag Art. This wonderful artist creates new artwork for his kids' lunch bags every day. I thought it would be so cool to see Arizona on a lunch bag, I sent him an email asking about the possibility. 24 hours later, this illustration (below) was sent to me. And now it's on his site. You can also find Lunch Bag Art on Facebook!

  • The Freestyle integration project passes a milestone
    Freestyle integration into Blender - 2009-12-08 14:59:05

A recognition shared among the dev team members is that as of this writing, the Freestyle branch is in a state good enough to allow users to produce reasonably useful results, even though a bit of care is necessary to work around known instability issues and missing features.  The Freestyle renderer, which was originally a stand-alone [...]
  • Donation credits
    BMesh Integration Blog - 2009-12-08 13:19:54

Someone recently reminded me about this in email.  Originally I planned to give donators credit on this site.  My plan was to launch this along with a system of incentives, whereby some random subset of donators would receive free bmesh t-shirts.   I wanted to do this all at once, but I ran into problems [...]

  • Modeling Dragons & Production Schedule
Sintel, the Durian Open Movie Project - 2009-12-08 11:54:15

In order to feed the pipeline as efficiently as possible in our limited time, we worked out this schedule of 3 modeling stages…

1st Stage =  5 days: Model with focus on form/proportions. Lock proportions. Pass to Nathan for rigging.

2nd Stage = 5 days: Model further detailing, topology refinement for better deformation with retopo, final inside mouth/teeth, etc.

    3rd Stage = 5 days: Sculpt finer details/surface.

I started with the Dragon Baby 2 weeks ago, followed by the Dragon Adult last week. 1st stages of both are now completed. Today I start on the Shaman!

  • Passing the torch
    Freestyle integration into Blender - 2009-12-08 08:36:58

After a week of consideration, I have come to the conclusion that it is best for me and the branch to discontinue my involvement in the Freestyle integration work. I am currently trying to focus on my software engineering career and unfortunately cannot devote enough time or energy to the branch.

Tamito has told me that he will continue to bring the branch forward. We have migrated the development blog to http://freestyleintegration.wordpress.com. You can update your RSS reader to point there, to stay in sync with the latest developments.

I do feel now is the right time to pass the torch to Tamito. Even though the overly ambitious plan was not realized entirely, I do feel that our work is in a state good enough to be brought to new heights by him and fresh blood. Sure, a lot of work has to be done to make it more robust and production-ready, but at least Freestyle can run independently without any external bindings within Blender. If anyone is interested in being involved in the branch, please contact Tamito or me. We will be glad to get you started.

I want to thank Ton Roosendaal, Jean-Luc Peurière and Stéphane Grabli, for giving me the opportunity to work on this fantastic project. I also cannot forget all of the beta testers from the BlenderArtists thread who have shared useful bug reports and constructive suggestions, the GraphicAll builders who have made the branch available to the whole world and the Blender development team who have patiently helped me on the IRC. The Blender community, both on the developers’ and the artists’ sides, is made up of many inspiring people. I have learned a lot from this project and I have nothing but thanks for your help and your support.

    Carpe diem,

    Maxime

  • Estrofe - O Chamado (The Ring)
    Vimeo / Blender3D [Animation/Videos] - 2009-12-08 08:12:07

Estrofe - O Chamado (The Ring)

Quick Blender animation, part test, part a surprise for the friends at Estrofe Sound Creations. They came with the audio and I thought it would be cool to setup an horror scene to match.

It's full of glitches, mesh interpenetrations, a freezing courtain, so if you see any error, consider it "paranormal activity". the intention was to learn many things, from the cloth simulations, volumetric lights, to audio sync, the phone cord, and to try to make a sinister atmosphere.

It was modeled in blender 2.49 and rendered in blender 2.50 alpha 0, and the version translation was a little problematic, specially with physics simulations.

  • Gimp and Graphics Tablet Public Enemies Johnny Depp Film Review Illustration
    Starbright Illustrations (blog) - 2009-12-08 01:53:54

    What a bunch of gangsters.

I’ve just written a Public Enemies Film Review, a review of the latest Johnny Depp movie for the review section of my Spiralcat writing and entertainment site. It’s a great movie and the decision to review it was a bit of a split second impulse. I knew that I didn’t have much time to write the review, never mind illustrate it, but I knew I wanted it to be the best it could be, and that meant including a picture of some sort.

So in the interests of speed I opened GIMP and attached my drawing tablet to the computer’s USB port. I chose my first colour, a very deep blue, and began to sketch in lines very quickly with the stylus. In my mind I immediately saw a stereotypical image of gangsters at night silhouetted against the moon and a cityscape, and I decided to go with it for my illustration, because Public Enemies is a gangster movie of the old school, and Johnny Depp plays an ordinary gangster, not some scene stealing show stopper like in The Pirates of the Caribbean.

I wanted to add a little extra to the image however, and another scene from the movie jumped to mind. There is scene where the gangsters are holed up in an out of the way hotel and then surrounded by the FBI. Led by Johnny Depp they shoot their way out in the middle of the night, and the flashes of light from the muzzles of the gun are huge in the pitch black darkness. I wanted to add a hint of that scene to the illustration, so I added a machine gun and a huge muzzle flash, and I reflected the light from windows in the building’s in the background of the image, and even in the shiny areas of coats and hats, and of course in the gangster’s eyes.

It’s a very raw and quick illustration done almost entirely by scratching away at the tablet with my stylus, and with only a few areas of flat colour added with GIMP’s vector illustration feature. It looks a bit comic book, a bit pulp fiction, and it’s perfect for my Johnny Depp gangster movie review.

  • Quick guide on how to setup IES files for rendering in Indigo Renderer
    Blender 3D Architect - 2009-12-08 00:48:13

For architectural visualization artists, no matter what type of renderer is used to create the project, always have quite a challenge to fulfill the expectations from their clients, and represent with the most realism the lighting of a scene. Almost all renderers today offer the possibility to use a special type of file, applied to [...] Related posts:
