  • A bug hunting day
    Tinker Code - 2010-01-02 20:50:56

Hi all Happy New 2010! Yesterday, I spent the whole day hunting bugs in the volumetric multiple light scattering code, since it was not functional (the migration from 2.4x to 2.5 was not straightforward). I hunted a lot of bugs, and now the Multiple light scattering feature works as it should do. I have sent the [...]
  • 2009 Overview
    Pablo Vazquez Personal Portfolio - 2010-01-02 11:18:50

Happiness, Joy, and Joyness, 2010 has come!

But.. what was 2009 about?, here is a quick overview:

    January

Vacations! spent a good time with my family here in Patagonia, first on the south, El Calafate, then went up to the north, through El Bolsón, Bariloche, and surroundings.

    February

Time to get back to work!, on Feb 14th I was taking a loooong flight from South South very South America to Scandinavia: Rio Gallegos > Buenos Aires > Amsterdam > Trondheim, Norway. To work on a Blender Game Engine project, the goal was to re-create the “old n’ epically medieval” NTNU building, had to model/texture the entire thing in 2 weeks! was awesome :D a good skill raiser with such short deadline =)

    March-April

Got to fly to Switzerland to meet the RGB Prod crew, whom I joined once again to work on some ads for BOSCH Rexroth New Ingenia and JPM Guides.

    May-June

Open Movie Workshop DVD Training Venom’s Lab!, wohoo!, 2 months in Amsterdam got a 4hs Training DVD as result, dream come true! :)

    July

First weeks of July got me packing and sending DVDs all over the world from the Blender e-shop, while at this I took a few days off to give the Blender Store a new skin!, not perfect but definitely more organized, thanks to some thinking together with Ton, I’m glad to have helped the Blender Foundation on this, this thing wasn’t updated since years!.

Enough Europe, on July 15th I was flying back home, Patagonia Argentina.

    August

Once at home, got the chance to fly over to San Cristobal, Venezuela! for 10 days, to hold an Advanced Blender Course, big Blender community is getting built there! it was really a great experience.

    September

Back at home, some relaxed family time, always blending of course! :) got some wips continued (evil tease)..

    October

Back to Europe!, first to Amsterdam to present Venom’s Lab! on the Blender Conference 2009: AWESOME! :D , got to meet the Durian team on the Blender Institute: UBER AWESOME! :D :D

    November

More travelling!, Argentina > the Netherlands > Italy > Spain > Switzerland :) . First had to go to Brunico, Italy, to work as freelance on an iPhone application project, had to model/texture/rig a Skier and animate him, great experience, really good training! (ok and good food too :) ), then got to fly to Murcia, Spain, for Blendiberia 2009!, where I held a talk about Blender 2.5, and gave a 2 days Blender course as well. Finally flew to Switzerland for more freelance work on RGB Prod studio, in lovely Aubonne.

    December

    Back home for holidays!, yay!

    2010?

Don’t know yet, more Blender for sure!, Fun, Courses, mmmh..maybe a Venom’s Lab! Vol 2 for Blender 2.6 ? :)

    Share your thoughts!,
Cheers and have a grrrrrrreat 2010!

  • BMW 335i Coupe: A Blender sports car
    mike's digital anthology - 2010-01-02 02:32:03

It’s finally finished!  I cleaned up model quite a bit and is starting the animation process.  Meanwhile, here is the latest renderings.

The car is modeled and rendered entirely in Blender 2.5.  Render time is around 20 minutes at 3200×2400.

A few of you asked me how I setup the material/lighting/rendering options.  Without releasing the Blender file (yet), here is a screenshot that might help:

From left to right, you can see the world settings, world texture settings, car body material, and finally car body texture.

    PS: Happy New Year!

  • I just saw Avatar in 3D and loved the design, the alien ecosystem and all the concepts.
    Starbright Illustrations - 2010-01-02 01:51:06

Does it look too cute vin pink?

OK, so I just watched Avatar and I’m not going to even fight the influence this is going to be having on my sketches for the foreseeable future.

It’s a great movie and I absolutely loved it. It has attracted some criticism for a certain simplicity in the story, but I think that’s missing the point. The alien planet and ecosystem is so richly imagined and contains such detail, that if a more complex or ambivalent story were attached to it the whole movie might have become too complex. And visually the movie is fantastic. For an old-school nerd like me it was great to see the 2001-like spaceship in the opening shots, and although a certain suspension of disbelief is required for the floating mountains, I think it’s worth it for the sheer majesty of the images.

    Brown, frightening?

Here is an earlier version of the illustration with a lot less detail. Even in this early version the influences from Avatar should be obvious to anyone who has seen the movie.

Just like in the movie there are two wings on the flying lizard. There is a huge gas giant in the background blocking out most of the horizon and the colour scheme of the creature is very lurid. There are of course a lot of differences too. Avatar took 12 years and a quarter of a billion dollars to create, while my image has had about four hours work done on it so far, and as I’m working in GIMP, the cost is just about zero.

I also had the great idea of opening FarmVille on my other computer and catching up with some of my chores while I’m sketching away on the graphics tablet on the first computer. It’s a great way to do some multitasking.

    Blender Audio Development Blog - 2010-01-02 00:06:40

As promised, here the longer news to what I’ve committed and written about Yesterday. Now after fixing the quickly reported bugs, I’ve been able to do some example videos. But first of all, I am happy that I can delete two of the TODO list points that were on the List, when opening the Blog: [...]
