    Freestyle integration into Blender - 2010-01-25 23:11:03

During the last week, the question of how to implement the clipping of imported meshes was investigated.  Mesh clipping is necessary for two reasons.  One reason is that the internal renderer does clipping.  The camera has two properties called near and far clipping distances, which define the locations of near and far XY planes (referred to [...]
  • Piratas VS Ninjas VS Robôs VS Caubóis
    4RTE DIGIT4L - 2010-01-25 22:18:00

  • The trouble with renaming a blog.
    goplexian.com | animation, modeling, scripting - 2010-01-25 20:06:00

When I first began writing  this blog the "Google Go language" had just been released and after just a few days I had become pretty enamored with it. I thought it would be pretty cool to dig through this new language and blog about that process and thus was this blog born.

Over the past couple months though I've found myself talking about a wide range of topics and not often specifically about Go itself, so I've decided that instead of trying to reign myself in I'm going to continue to write on an eclectic group of subjects. This group will of course include Go programming as one of its topics, but I don't want to give you readers the wrong impression that this blog is focused exclusively on that topic.

So in light of all this I am renaming this blog "One billion extensible bits", extensibility of course is the ability for a system to embrace change without altering its infrastructure which is sort of what I'm trying to do right now, a billion bits is about one eights of a gigabyte, or in more practical terms about 128 megabytes.

So really I have no idea what "128 megabytes of extensible data" means but hopefully that will itself ensure that it works as a wide enough umbrella under which to operate this blog.

I am also changing the RSS syndication feed to http://feeds.feedburner.com/goplexian. Feedburner tells me that currently the blog has around 30 subscribers so if you happen to be one of them I hope that you will find this new mix of content interesting and helpful and will continue to stick around. The old subscription URL will continue to receive updates but they will show up under the old title, if you want to see the new blog title you will need to update to the new URL.

And finally, my thanks goes out to you subscribers. Seeing your numbers grow and reading your comments is quite encouraging and always interesting, I'm really enjoying writing this blog and I hope to hear from more of you in the future.

  • New team member!
    Durian Open Movie Project - 2010-01-25 17:14:05

Freshly arrived from across the Atlantic: Jean-Sebastien Guillemette from Montreal!
He’s going to help us putting the film together: modeling and design, scene layouts, lighting, render, composites. Exciting :)

Oh, and I’m back from a 2-week’s holidays in La Palma, Canarian Islands. I’ve spent a week on slowing down and relaxing, and a week on Blender 2.5 code (drag’n'drop). :) One one of my walks there (breathtakingly beautiful green island) I came by Dragon Trees. These are very ancient long living trees that are an important symbol in our film too…

  • PH2PC Storyboards - Sequence 1
Prince Harming To Prince Charming - 2010-01-25 13:28:02

Storyboards of the first sequence of PH2PC animation short which has around 18 sequences that are boarded…

Emily Cawthon who was the first creative head on the project, created this storyboard in a record time. This was the first storyboard which formed the basis for remaining storyboards. At that time, we barely had the characters finalized and we had Emily do her best come up with something to see the timing.

  • How to animate anything in Blender 2.50?
    Blender 3D Architect - 2010-01-25 13:00:26

As you may be aware of the new tools and functionalities of Blender 2.50, one of the new features is the possibility to animate anything with the new and redesigned animation tools. Back in Blender 2.4x we had to work on a few tricks to create animations with modifiers parameters or other values, especially if [...] Related posts:

  • Work in Progress January 2010
    The Process Diary - 2010-01-25 13:00:00

Welcome to the first WIP video for 2010. If you notice that the interface is slightly different, it's not your eyes - it's my mac. I have modified the way I record the video this month, to try and save a couple of steps in production.

TPD - January 2010 from Paul Caggegi on Vimeo.

My method so far has been:
    • record the Ubuntu desktop using GTK RecordMyDesktop
    • transfer the files to my mac
    • transcode from theora mkv to mp4 using FFMPEG for Mac
    • Import into FCP and render to HD
    • Edit (speed up, do VO, etc)
    • Export and compress to various formats
I have a new bit of software: iShowU HD. While not free, it's inexpensive ($30US for regular, $60US for pro), and it records my mac interface. It has plenty of features, and makes recording a breeze. Because I can record in Apple ProRes and at HD quality, it cuts out alot of steps. This video's method was:
    • Record tutorial WHILE speaking over modeling
    • Edit in FCP
    • Export
    • Upload
This video is in real time so there should be no complaints about going too fast! I'm still sticking to a 20 minute limit (or there abouts) for the sake of your bandwidth. Each tutorial will be about the same, so hopefully I'll get hands, feet and basic head done in 20 next month!

As is becoming the habit, please find the different size downloads linked below:

  • EcoRobot
    BlenderNation - 2010-01-25 09:00:16

By lechu This week’s art submission features lechu’s EcoRobot, as it is being fueled with water gathered from leaves and grass, in a beautiful blend of nature and machine. Created some time ago (Blender 2.46!), and though (apparently) unfinished, lechu has just dug it out of his archives and posted it for us to enjoy! Find out [...]
