News: Status of the BlenderNewbies Blender 2.5 Training DVD's

I expect the DVD (actually it's 2 DVD's) to be completed by the end of the month (October). It's been a long and bumpy road, but I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel.

The interesting thing is that there will be far more tutorials on the DVD's than there are on the blogsite (and that took me four years to accumulate!).

TV Commercial – Entrust Federal Credit Union

Recently, Hand Turkey Studios worked with Silent Partner Media to complete a television commercial for Entrust Federal Credit Union, airing in the Richmond area. The commercial features Entrust’s mascot character, Gary, acting on screen as the narrator describes the benefits of banking with Entrust. The commercial is available for viewing on the Entrust YouTube channel and it’s embedded below for your convenience.

3D animation, compositing, and editing for this television spot was all done using Blender. GIMP and the GIMP Animation Package were used for the hand-drawn animation and cleaning up the masking on individual frames. We had a pretty quick turnaround time for this (about 2 weeks to produce the whole thing, including shooting the hand, recording audio, composing music, and creating the final animation and composite), but it was a ton of fun to produce and we’re quite happy with the results.

Ontem foi uma daquelas noites mágicas que fazem a gente uma vez mais entender porque estamos nesta jornada. Acho que o dia que o Blender for o melhor programa do mercado eu paro de usá-lo. Eu não quero um programa 3D. Eu quero lidar com pessoas e suas imperfeições. Ambições, frustrações e sonhos. Um programa perfeito é um programa apático, uma maquina de Coca-Cola ®. Um programa vivo precisa de você, ele depende do fator humano pra funcionar.

Eu estive pensando esses dias, na tentativa vã de entender porque eu gosto de bugs (te juro). Acho que um bug é uma forma do programa de te dizer que ele está ali, vivo, querendo saber mais de você. É uma forma de tentar te acordar da “Matrix” do mundo de consumo das galinhas que nascem nuggets e das vacas que nascem hamburgeres. Eu confesso que nunca fui a um matadouro. Mas já tive meus momentos de matar galinha (o que me rendeu valiosas lições de vida e histórias pra contar) e já olhei as entranhas de nosso querido programa de perto. De tão perto que assusta. E essa é a sua verdadeira natureza. E é ela que revela o quão viva é sua estrutura, estrutura essa da qual cada um de nós faz parte.

Para os se perguntando o que leva alguém a acordar tão devagar e divagante, acho que isso são coisas que só a vida explica. Para quem acompanha de perto as novidades do mundo Blender sabe que ontem à noite foi a estréia de Sintel. Ano passado eu tive a oportunidade de ver de perto o storyboard do filme e em Julho deste ano assisti a uma versão quase finalizada. Se por um lado isso estraga a surpresa da riqueza da história, isso também enriquece a apreciação da obra completa. Pois bem, a premiere foi em Utrecht, e dificilmente alguém que não more na Holanda teria como visitar a cidade para assistir a 15 minutos de filme. Acontece que Deus, além de Brasileiro e gostar de futebol, também é fanático por Blender. Só é possível. Estou fazendo um projeto há mais de um ano, e calhou de a data do evento coincidir com a semana de Sintel. E há 45 minutos de distância de trem. Ainda acho que estou sonhando

A estreia de Sintel foi (como vocês já devem ter imaginado) fantástica. O filme na telona realmente tocou à toda plateia. Depois dos 15 minutos de filme, todo mundo esperou calado, um silêncio quase embaraçoso, enquanto mais de 2.000 nomes rolavam na tela. Foi um dos momentos mais lindos, ali estava estampado todo mundo que pôde diretamente dar uma força para o filme. Mais emocionante que isso só o final do filme, que obviamente não vou revelar Depois do filme teve a festa. E essa então não sei nem se eu saberia como contar. Mais uma vez acho que mágica é uma das melhores palavras para encaixar aqui. Esta perde apenas para minha outra palavra favorita, “humana”. Esqueça essa história de networking por um momento. Acho que já não gosto mais nem de usar “ecossistemas”. No final das contas as relações são tão pessoais que dificilmente são explicáveis por qualquer que seja a dita categorização.

Passada meia-noite, na eminência de virar abóbora, levei pra “casa” o copo da minha última cerveja. Eu já estava de saída, com receio de perder o último trem, quando o Ton fez questão de pegar duas cervejas pra gente. É o tipo de convite que não se recusa. A cerveja eu terminei de tomar no trem. O copo por sua vez, agora tem lugar cativo na minha coleção. Do lado dos DVDs autografados do Big Buck Bunny, Venom Labs e os outros (e meus valiosos crachás de BlenderPROs, CHEs, CONFs, …). Do lado de preciosas memórias e emoções. Lembranças estas que transbordam, numa singela manhã de terça-feira, num friozinho gostoso que nos lembra que estamos longe de casa. Mas o bom filho a casa volta. E enquanto o corpo não embarca, dexe que essas palavras o vento leve e a chuva lave.

A love hate relationship with the Gnu/Linux desktop

I've been using Linux on the desktop for many years, but sometimes the state of the Gnu/Linux desktop really frustrates me and it seems that a rant like this is the only thing that I have the ability to do about it.
