  • Tarazet the role-playing game, back as free pdf download
    Starbright Illustrations - 2010-02-28 22:52:03

Tarazet the Role-playing Game is back as a free pdf download. I can’t tell you the pleasure it gives me to have this game back under development. Every illustration I produce of a spaceship or monster is just more inspiration that gets fed back into the role-playing game background, enriching it, and in the process allowing the illustrations to be based on a more and more substantial foundation. Tarazet is really becoming an extensive source of inspiration for any science fiction gamemaster.

I’m really beginning to get a feel for what does and doesn’t happen, and does and doesn’t work in the Tarazet universe, with is a funny thing to be able to admit about a supposedly imaginary space-opera-type fantasy role-playing game setting. And the pdf version of these role-playing game rules can be downloaded here.

It is a rules-light game system that supports a richly imagined universe of adventure, well at least as much richly-imagined universe of adventure as it is possible to fit into a 23 page pdf game’s rule book. It is however growing all the time. As I create pages with illustrations, ideas and text with the Tarazet universe as a setting I just copy and paste it with a few refinements directly into the pdf. I’ve had a lot of fun coming up with ideas for this game setting, and that even extends to some ideas for science fiction adventures. It can be a chore coming up with new challenges for your player characters and it’s always good to see that this basic necessity has been addressed to some degree in a rules book.

  • New spaceship design gallery, and some SEO tips
    Starbright Illustrations - 2010-02-28 15:49:27

This spaceship design is an example of the sort of spaceship that might be used by characters in a science fiction role-playing game when they want to avoid being seen as they go about their adventures.

It’s a good example of the sort of science-fiction illustrations I’ve been doing recently, illustrations more orientated towards role-playing games or graphic novels, and also the work I’ve been doing on StarbrightIllustrations.com, making sure its focus is right.

The work I’ve been doing on Starbright Illustrations, turning it into the showcase for my work that I’ve always intended, is actually a lot of fun. It’s creative and colourful and intuitive, mostly using the free web design app Kompozer. I have done a lot of work on the science-fiction illustration gallery, and I believe it’s ready for visits from the public.

It’s a full-colour selection of the best of my recent work. Most of the images are spaceships, but there are also a few robots and vehicles too.

At the same time as providing an outlet for my work the blog and website carry ads too, and these have been making a little tiny bit of money, usually between five and ten ponds a month, which is enough to cover the costs of hosting. I was thinking perhaps I can do a little better than this, so while redesigning the site to make it a better display case for my illustrations and art I also did a bit of research – Googling – to find ways to make the site more SEO friendly, and improve ad performance. One thing that came up time and again was keywords.

It seems having really good keywords on your site will greatly improve ad revenue. So I found a list of keywords, and it makes depressing reading. They are absolutely all about finding loans and more money.

I think I’ll stick to my spaceships and illustrations, there’s no way I’m going to write about loans, car insurance and mortgages, just to increase my ad revenue.

Hi, this is a friend of Farsthary, Some months ago, Farsthary was speaking about OpenCL, an open and multi-platform programming language (still maturing) that harnesses the computing power of all the available computing devices (cpu, recent graphic cards (ati, nvidia)…), allowing to have the power of a small cluster in a single computer. Indeed, recent [...]
  • You know you have a Google Voice account if...
    Art + Logic - 2010-02-28 01:52:00

This post is something my daughter wrote. We both have Google Voice numbers, if you have one, you can probably relate.

    by Alice Nyquist

All phone numbers given are EXAMPLES.

You have a phone number that's easy to remember, like 224-444-422 or a phone number that has your name or a word in it (like 720-7HAPPY7)

You can't remember your cell phone number because you give out your Google number to everyone.

You can't remember the numbers that make up the name/word/phrase that you put in your phone number, so you always just recite it with the name/word/phrase...and get funny looks

You have to explain to your friends why your phone number is "like that"

When someone wants the actual numbers for your Google Voice number (for those of us using a phrase), you have to look at your phone keyboard and call out the numbers SLOWLY to make sure you don't make a spelling mistake :)

You prefer to text message from your computer.

You check your voice mail from your computer.

Entertainment is laughing at the funny transcripts Google writes of your voicemails.

You have recorded a separate voicemail greeting for each friend/family member. And the first time people call your cell phone number and get voicemail, it scares them because the voicemail knows their name! (I personally haven't done this yet so that I don't freak anyone out, but it's a pretty cool feature)

You don't find it strange if your home phone and cell phone are ringing at the same time...about the same caller.

You find it annoying when you pick up your cell phone only to have Google Voice hang up on you because someone answered the home phone first.

When filling out work/volunteer/sign-up/membership forms, you debate whether to give out your home phone number or Google voice number.
