  • Talks about which Vega Strike spaceship model to redo
    Starbright Illustrations (blog) - 2010-04-24 12:47:43

OK I’m still talking to the Technical Art Director at Vega Strike about creating spaceships for the game and reworking/cleaning up spaceships (called vessels or units in game parlance) that have fallen behind the cutting edge of 3D game design.

    These included;-

    1. A collection of planes that needed to be welded together to form a proper spaceship mesh. To test to see if it was a single mesh I simply grabbed one of the rear stabilisers and it came right off.

    2. A spaceship that looks like a MIG of an F18.

    3. A wedge shaped spaceship with a substantial hull that looks like it could survive in space already. It needs a lot of 3D work and a lot of Greebles though.

    4. A blocky spaceship that looks like a cross between a trader and a fighter. It is actually quite an interesting design, with no atmospheric streamlining except a stabilising tail. Too tail like to be just a radiator.

    5. A very science fiction space design with an interesting wing shape.

I’ve also been working on my own spaceship and it’s making progress. I will of course continue tinkering with it, even while working on the Vega Strike spaceship designs.

My spaceship has been making progress too of course.

  • Bits of Blender #54 - Keyframes
    Art + Logic - 2010-04-24 01:53:00

This episode has two "firsts" for Bits of Blender.
    1. Richard takes the lead
    2. Blender 2.5 is featured
Richard has been wanting to do a Bit and ever since trying 2.5, he does not want to go back to 2.49b. Seems natural that the next generation of Blender is introduced by the next generation!

I'm still half in 2.49b and half in 2.5, so I can't guarantee I'll be doing a 2.5 Bit next, it'll have to depend on what I'm teaching. I think 2.5 is great, but it's still alpha software, which means it's feature set is not yet frozen (or even completely implemented) and there are plenty of bugs. All normal stuff for alpha software.

If you're new to Blender, don't judge its stablity by 2.5. Blender 2.49b is among my most stable and best-performing applications. When 2.5 moves out of beta, I've no doubt it'll have the same high-level of stability and performance as 2.49b but also with a great new user interface and a host of new features and functionality.
