    Star Strike spaceship render, franklin

    It's dark out here

After a lot of useful notes and input about my progress on the model and design consideratins based on the role it will play in the game, my spaceship has taken a few more haltering steps toward completion.

  • Vega Strike 3D spaceship model for redesign decided
    Starbright Illustrations (blog) - 2010-04-25 03:26:23

The 3D spaceship thread that I started over at the Vega Strike forums is turning into an invaluable training aid, at least for me with my spaceship obsession. After considering a few of the in-game models that needed a makeover we have finally decided on a candidate for my tender mercies – The Franklin.

    the first render

    Quite Basic, isn't it?

According to this forum post the Franklin is a diplomatic craft costing 1,000,000 credits. The post also says that despite it’s impressive stats, the Franklin should not be used for combat unless strictly necessary. It’s mass is 199 metric tons and it has a small hold of 300 cubic meters

Almost a quarter of the mass of the spaceship is made up of fuel, 47.91 Metric Tons of Lithium-6. It has weapons: 8 forward, 1 back. It also has a SPEC drive.

200 tons makes it about the size of a New York tug. Image from Wikimedia.

The spaceship should be about this size.

So it will be medium sized with two small floors of windows, plus maybe a tower or bridge with a few more windows – to show scale.

The model also has to be smoothed, but as this page discusses this isn’t as simple as just hitting the set smooth button and letting Blender get on with the calculations.

But the most important job is to add greebles. This model is just to simple and smooth to be believable as a spaceship.

I first chopped it in half, mirror modeled it, removed the fighter pilot bubble and added a colour scheme.

    First altered Franklin render

    Blue and Green, nice.

    It's got guns

And here is the Blend file.

    Now to add some greebles.
