    My World of VFX - 2010-08-29 19:19:35

So. I wanted to have a personal web page where I could show some of my works, but then it occurred to me that I might not have enough material and time that I could actually create something that could be called a site. So, a blog it is then. I hope this won’t fade out anytime soon.

What would be a better way to start blogging than to show some fresh material that also matches closely to blog’s domain name www.fxgrill.com. Here’s a fire / smoke element that got rendered just yesterday and will be used in a short film called Materia 2 – The Awakening. Blender 2.5 was used for simulating the smoke and After Effects was used for the particles & compositing.

And here’s the recruiting teaser from Samuli Jomppanen:

  • 3D Artist Magazine
    Nyquist Art + Logic - 2010-08-29 15:24:00

My Blender Basics tutorial from CartoonSmart.com made it onto the 3D Artist magazine disk for issues 16 and 18! (Thanks Will!)

It's been a while since I've posted an update (or a Bit). So an update is overdue! I'm still here and using Blender. I've been using Blender 2.49b on a long contract job. I've been sticking with 2.49b because the scripting APIs are stable. Now that 2.5 has gone into beta, I'll look into migrating the project to 2.5 if the APIs (which have changed significantly for scripting) are more stable. I've held off on Blender lessons in 2.5 until the beta to avoid frustrating new users, so now I'm plotting my first full-length 2.5 Blender course.

In the meantime, I'm developing my first ActionScript 3 course for CartoonSmart.com. It is on creating a strategy game. It's not just a cookbook lesson, I am teaching concepts that can be carried forward to other languages/frameworks. I've been using AS3 since it was released with Flash CS3 in Spring 2007. I've used its predecessors AS2 and AS1 as well. AS3 is more similar to Java and C# than AS2/AS1 ( both of which I've also used professionally). I've been wanting to teach a class on it for sometime, so I'm looking forward to this course's release!

So here it is. The Infamous R-reel. This one is mainly to show you that we are working on this thing, and hopefully get some results out of this. There have been some delays along the way, but still wrecking on hard. Pushing it forward day by day. If all goes well we’ll soon be start seeing some screens of the characters (beyond the glimpses seen so far). Anyhow Enjoy ->

  • Nearly finished!
Sintel, the Durian Open Movie Project - 2010-08-29 11:39:42

Dolf spent the last two weeks here on a wonderful film credits, based on David’s concept art, which added another few minutes to the film! Pablo and Soenke keep trying to make shots even more awesome, but that also has to stop soon now. The next week we can still do last re-renders, spend time on a final color grade session, and then at sept 7 deliver the final files to the film lab. The final Dolby master then has been scheduled on the 9th, with the first film print – for the premiere on NFF – ready tuesday 14th.

    Film stats:

    - Film itself: 12:24
    - Credits: 2:24

Total length: 14 minutes 48 seconds, or 888 seconds!

Who could have imagined! We started with a target of of “6-8 minutes” you know. :) And even after the finals screening, Colin and Beorn managed to add 4 seconds to the film!

Next on the todo: get the DVD mastering started up, we already have a menu loop for it, a quad-split-screen version with storyboard-layout-opengl-final and will add a number of fun deleted scenes! Ali has the documentary finished (60 minutes). Oh, and we didn’t forget the tutorials, our loyal team members are working from home on it now. :)

(BTW: I’ve updated the About pages with proper history info and added the missing artist’s mugshots, this in preparation of press releases and for magazines etc.)

(BTW2: the date for the actual online release has to be pinned down still. Aim is to do this within a week after the premiere. Also depends on how fast we can get the DVDs done. News on this will follow)
