Sequence [10] – Yubiy’s Failing School
YUBIY:
STEP 3: KNOW YOUR D.O.W?
TURK: Huh?
YUBIY: D.O.W is your Date (D) Obtaining (O) Worthiness (W). You need to know what your current market value is to her.
As Yubiy is saying each word, his pointer is tapping on the appropriate spot on the board.
TURK: How do I do that?
YUBIY:Well, let’s start by making a list of all the reasons she would want to go out with you, and then compare it to a list of all the reasons she wouldn’t want to go out with you. Then, we just have to figure out how to make those bad qualities go away.
Yubiy walks up to a chalk board and draws a line down the middle and begins writing.
The scene fades to just the left side of the board and scrolls through a long list of Pros.
(kind, funny, considerate, motivated, caring, gentle, generous, good listener, sympathetic,
empathetic, supportive). When it gets to the bottom, it quickly pans out and brings focus
to the right side of the board which has only one thing written in large letters that are
circled, saying, “I’m and Ugly Turkey.” To the right of the board, you see Turk standing
with his gaze fixed on the Ugly Turkey line. He takes a deep breath and looks down witha sigh.
YUBIY: Okay, maybe we can’t make it go away… so you’ll just have to show her that looks aren’t the only thing that matters.
They both stare at the board inquisitively, wondering how in the world they plan on doing
that.

Renderfarm.fi - 2010-09-15 16:44:07
I'm happy to announce that we received notice today that Renderfarm.fi has been chosen to receive the EUROPRIX Quality Seal. EUROPRIX was started by the Austrian presidency in 1998 as an EU member states initiative, supported by the European Commission DG Enterprise and Information Society, governments of other countries in the European Union and private industry. Its main activity was the organisation of the pan-European Multimedia Content Award.
Anja Pohl from the EUROPRIX offices in Salzburg, Austria writes: We would like to thank you very much for your participation in the EUROPRIX Multimedia Awards 2010. We want to congratulate you on the high quality of your EUROPRIX Multimedia Awards 2010 entry and are delighted to inform you that your project with the ID 1049 was awarded the official EUROPRIX Quality Seal. The Quality Seal winners will be showcased within September on the EUROPRIX website.
Your achievement is outstanding because 299 entries from 30 countries were evaluated by the jury team of the EUROPRIX Multimedia Awards. Your project was evaluated in two rounds by two different panels of jurors. By awarding the quality seal they wish to recommend your project to consumers and users. The EUROPRIX Quality Seal is proof that your project is highly innovative and creative. Only 36 projects received the quality seal.
It goes without saying that Renderfarm.fi's success in this multimedia competition is directly tied to the work carried out for years by Janus Kristensen in BURP. In this I think the Quality Seal should apply to the original project aswell. Equally I think this has been a team effort so I'd like to thank my development team of Nathan Letwory, Jesse Kaukonen, Olivier Romand and Samuel Anjam for their efforts. I also thought that this would also be a perfect time to thank all the people who've contributed to the project in the form of their thesis works and/or traineeships at Laurea UAS: Lauri Viitala, Lassi Haaranen, Heikki Seppälä, Niko Suomalainen, Jani Lintunen, Juha Laakso and Laura Aspholm. Finally I'd like to thank all of you - the volunteers. You make Renderfarm.fi possible. :)

A first mock up of a possible book cover
I’ve been doing some sketching lately, for example this drawing of a spacesuit that I sketched a while back, and some of these sketches remind me of the sort of design sketches done for movies, TV shows and video games. And I thought, why don’t I try to put together the sort of portfolio of designs that often gets released to coincide with a big sci-fi movie or game coming out.
Of course one reason is that I don’t have enough sketches and digital paintings yet, but working on that will be the fun part.
I’ve always enjoyed doing these sketches, but have also always been at a bit of a loss about what exactly to do with them. I’ve always produced far more spaceship sketches than I can ever hope to turn into 3D models or renders for instance. Even coming up with role-playing game statistics and deck plans (for example for Traveller) is also far too much work considering the number of sketches.
With the amount of spaceships, and other assorted sci-fi hardware, robots, clothes and monsters that I sketch I would end up doing nothing else but sketching, building models and generating RPG stats. I like them but I don’t have the time.
With this book idea, now all I’ll have to do when I finish a sketch, render, or digital painting is to decide how it will fit into the design portfolio, write a couple of hundred words about it – or more if I’m feeling inspired – and post it to the website. When I have a couple of hundred pages like these that I’m really proud of I’ll put the book together. And maybe even turn the whole thing into a movie, book series or game or something.
As soon as there are enough pages to make it worthwhile I’ll make it available as a download so it can be enjoyed off line.
That’s the plan anyway.

Comments for 3D Animation Project - 2010-09-15 11:08:43
Hello Damian!
We have been on our summer holidays, and things have been quiet here on the blog…
The animation itself isn’t finished yet, and we’ll have to make decision on what to do with the project soon.
One thing is for sure: we’ll keep posting stuff on this blog as soon as possible, wether it’s with “Homecoming” or any other animation project that comes along.
If you, Damian, have any suggestions or things you’d like to see on our blog, please tell us!
Greetings,
Martti
